A remarkable technical innovation was with the experimental vehicle the Mercedes C of 111 tested double wishbones-front wheel suspension with guidance roll radius 0 and brake pitch support by oh cross-setting. The multi-steering wheel rear axle of the C111 was used with the W116 however not, but a diagonal pendulum axle. It essentially corresponds to the construction, which was introduced bythe line eight - middle class types 1968. A triangular wishbone was with the knuckle firmly connected and with two rubber mounts on a diagonal line in the body stored; the outside camp further in front as the inside.

The Top models 450 SE and SEL have a starting reconciliation for preventing the tail sinking with strong acceleration. The SEL variant of the 350ers was introduced at the end of of 1973, those of the 280ers in the spring 1974. 280 S with extended wheel base one did not offer.

In September 1975 the flagship 450 SEL 6,9 is presented. The engine is derived from the 600er Mercedes W100, whose delicate and complex fuel injection system simplified and whose capacity was increased on nearly seven liters. With 286 HP and with the to date highest torque of passenger car history the sedan 225 reaches km/h top speed and accelerates on 100 km/h in 7,4 s. Fuel injection.

The 450 SEL 6,9 technical periodical Road & TRACK with outstanding results on continental-European motorways acquires itself the honour title Colossus OF the Road in a test of US. The magazine auto engine haven lends 1975 even the title the best car of the world to the 450SEL 6,9. AMS tests the 6.9er with a maximum speed of 234,1 Km/h.

In May 1978 in the export, mainly into the USA, with the engine OM617 a diesel engine is introduced for the first time as model 300 SD in the s-class. The 300 SD is that world-wide first series passenger cars with turbo-diesel engine. So that Mercedes can export its models also further into the USA, is to help the 300 SD to lower fleet consumption. This will necessary, in order to fulfill the arranging size introduced by president Jimmy Carter. It means that the average consumption of all models of a manufacturer may not rise over a certain mark.

The last W116 - 300 SD - came out of the factory in September 1980 in Sindelfingen. In total Meredes produces: 473.035. W116.
